What is the South Side Healthy Community Organization?

The SSHCO is a new organization dedicated to helping you live your healthiest life!

Thirteen healthcare providers – six clinics, five safety net hospitals and two academic medical centers – have come together to form the SSHCO to provide more access to health care, health education and community resources so people all over Chicago’s South Side have what is needed to live long, healthy lives. The SSHCO is adding doctors, nurses, specialists and community health workers throughout our network so it will be easy to get the care you need.

Who can enroll in the SSHCO?

Currently, SSHCO is enrolling patients who come to the emergency room at St. Bernard Hospital or who seek care at Friend Health or Near North Health. That’s where we have community health workers in place so far.

Our focus is on South side residents with no insurance or who are covered by Medicaid, and who have one or more of the following health conditions:

  • A history of high blood pressure
  • Are pregnant
  • Had a recent emergency room visit for substance or alcohol use
  • Recently received inpatient treatment for mental illness

What this means for you:

  • More access to doctors and nurses who keep you healthy and strong;
  • Connections to community resources that can help you with food, jobs, housing, and transportation to health care appointments;
  • Help addressing small health issues now before they become big;
  • A community health worker guiding you every step of the way.

Understanding Black Maternal Health: Midwife Q&A

Studies show that Black women in the United States experience poor maternal health outcomes, including higher rates of death related to pregnancy or childbirth.

Additionally, as a result of both societal and health system factors Black women are more likely to experience barriers in gaining access to quality care.

University of Chicago Medicine certified nurse midwives Cynthia Jacinthe, DNP, APN, CNM, and Karie Stewart, APN, MSN, MPH, CNM, discuss these disparities and answer questions about maternal health for Black women, especially during these challenging times.
